Joy Division
On March 14th, 1979, a band played a gig in a small South Manchester hall.
The venue was Bowdon Vale Youth Club and the band were ..
Photographing the event was 18 year old photographer Martin O'Neill.
His work resulted in a collection of 26 black and white photographs,
beginning in the crowd and ending up on stage behind Ian Curtis.
The collection comprises exciting close-up shots of
Ian, Peter Hook, Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris
in one of their band's earliest gigs.
The pictures were first shown at Hale Library, Altrincham, in 2005,
to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of lead singer Ian Curtis.
This venue was the closest I could find to the original Bowdon Vale Youth Club,
and I'm proud to say that the exhibition was visited by,
among others, Ian's widow Debbie, Tony Wilson,
Ian's late mother Doreen and the producers of the movie 'Control'.
